Microsoft acquires Caligari

by pnobre

As stated in this forum post by Roman Ormandym, CEO, Caligari "has become a wholly owned subsidiary of Microsoft Corporation". Caligari team will be working with Virtual Earth team which is in the process of building out an immersive 3D Web experience.

I wonder what Truespace will become in Microsoft World... Expression Blend 3D ? We'll see.

Windows Home Server... at last... or not ?

by pnobre

This weekend I’ve decided to give windows home server a try. Grabbed an installation DVD, a spare machine I had at home (which, by the way, didn’t run for 1 ½ year now) and here we go.

Not a pleasant experience, I must confess. I didn’t have (or didn’t want to look for) a floppy disk drive available. No problem! We are in 2008, flash drives are fully supported by now, and this beautiful “piece of software” will “eat” its drivers from a flash drive. Not exactly!
Error after error stating that the drivers could not be loaded, and that Windows Setup had copied it to the wrong place (oops, that was not a message from setup, but it did happen) I managed to get a spare floppy drive, a beautiful 12 years old 3.5” High Density floppy drive (I wonder if windows home server setup would prefer a Low Density, or event a double sided single density 5.25” drive), and here we go.

Now, after plugging the floppy drive and instruct setup to copy drivers from a floppy disk (yes, I managed to find one) windows is installing, and I can finally try Windows Home Server.

I intend to post a tutorial, for people trying to install WHS in a fairly new computer (<10 years) after and if, I can complete this setup.
